The History of Set Free

Set Free Ministries began in the early 1980s under the leadership of Pastor Phil Aguilar in Southern California. With a heart for the outcasts—those struggling with addiction, homelessness, gang life, and incarceration—Pastor Phil launched a radical street ministry that didn’t look like traditional church. It was raw, real, and rooted in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Set Free became known for its discipleship homes, street preaching, motorcycle ministries, and no-compromise preaching of the Gospel. Over the years, the movement spread across the country, with new Set Free churches and ministries springing up in cities where the need was great and the workers were few.

Set Free Oceanside

Founded by Pastor Vince Garcia in 2013, Set Free Church of Oceanside carries that same DNA—reaching the unreachable, loving the unlovable, and setting captives free through the love and power of Jesus Christ. We’re not about religion; we’re about relationship. Whether you’re walking in off the street or looking for a place to grow deeper in your faith, this is a church where everyone is welcome and nobody walks alone.

We believe in the transforming power of Jesus, the truth of God's Word, and the mission to go out and make disciples. You'll find passionate worship, bold preaching, and a family of believers who are all about living life together in freedom.

Pastor Vince Garcia

Pastor Vince Garcia, the founder and lead pastor of Set Free Church of Oceanside, is a dedicated soul winner with a profound commitment to helping and serving those in need. With a focus on evangelism, Pastor Vince passionately preaches the message of Jesus Christ, teaching the Word of God with clarity and compassion. He started Set Free Oceanside in 2013 with a mission to serve the homeless, addicts, and others struggling with life's difficulties. The Oceanside church is part of the larger Set Free Ministries movement, which began in Southern California in the 1980s. 

Career within Set Free Ministries:

Set Free Church of Yucaipa (1995–2011): Pastor Garcia's journey with Set Free began here, where he served in various capacities, including as an evangelist pastor.

Set Free Church of Romoland (2011–2012): He served as an associate Pastor at this location.

Set Free Church of Oceanside (2013–Present): Pastor Garcia founded the Oceanside church, starting his outreach on a motorized bicycle to invite people to the ministry's discipleship home. 

Ministry and outreach:

Focus on the disenfranchised: Pastor Garcia continues the original Set Free mission of reaching out to the "lost, the broken, and the forgotten".

Discipleship and counseling: He provides pastoral counseling, mentorship, and spiritual direction, with a specific passion for mentoring young men.

Community engagement: His ministry also organizes events to support those in need through programs like a shower ministry, providing meals, and community outreaches.

Evangelism: He preaches the Gospel with the goal of bringing change to the lives of those struggling with addiction and homelessness. 

Leadership and vision:

As the founder and senior pastor, Pastor Garcia's leadership is critical to the church's outreach efforts and expansion.

 Our Pastor started his journey with Set Free in 1995 at Set Free Yucaipa, under Pastor Willy Dalgity.  In 2013 Pastor Vince stepped out in faith and planted in Oceanside with no money and just a motorized bicycle!  Pastor Vince started off by riding around on his bike and inviting people that were down and out and just on bad times, whether from struggling with addictions, tired of being homeless, sick and tired of being sick and tired, he set out to invite them to come into his home which later became the  Saints Nation Discipleship program, our FREE live in discipleship home!  Since Pastor Vince has started Set Free Oceanside, he has a vision to take over San Diego County for Jesus, by planting a church in every town, and assisting the disenfranchised everywhere he goes!!!!
